From March 31, 2025, new recycling regulations—known as “Simpler Recycling”—will take effect across England. These changes aim to standardise waste management for businesses, improving recycling rates and making it easier for non-domestic premises to dispose of waste responsibly.
What is Simpler Recycling?
The UK government (DEFRA) is introducing Simpler Recycling to ensure that businesses, schools, hospitals, and other non-domestic premises recycle specific materials separately. If your business generates more than 5kg of recyclable waste per week, you’ll need to separate the following materials:
♻ Food waste ♻ Glass ♻ Metal ♻ Recyclable plastic ♻ Paper & cardboard
Why Are These Changes Being Introduced?
The Simpler Recycling initiative is designed to:
✅ Boost UK Recycling Rates – Making waste separation more consistent to increase national recycling figures.
✅ Reduce Waste Contamination – Ensuring cleaner waste streams so more materials can be properly recycled.
✅ Support Net Zero Targets – Diverting waste from landfills to contribute to the UK’s environmental goals.
Key Dates to Know
📅 March 31, 2025 – Businesses and non-household premises (excluding micro-firms) must begin recycling all waste streams.
📅 March 31, 2026 – Households must separate all recyclable materials, except plastic films.
📅 March 31, 2027 – Micro-firms (businesses with fewer than 10 employees) must comply with recycling rules.
How Can Your Business Stay Compliant?
To meet the new requirements, businesses must:
🔹 Arrange Waste Collections – Work with a licensed waste management provider (that’s us!)
🔹 Recycle Specific Materials – Ensure proper disposal of food waste, glass, metal, plastic, paper, and cardboard.
🔹 Set Up Recycling Stations – Implement clearly labeled bins for different waste types (we can do this)
At Principal Hygiene, we understand that regulatory changes can be challenging. We’re here to support your business with waste solutions that help you stay compliant while promoting a sustainable future.
